It was a successful weekend for Worthing Harriers at the Indoor County Championships with several runners knocking big chunks off their personal bests on the fast indoor Sutton track. Jimmy Seacombe and Ella Chalmers both in the U15 agegroup were the stand out performances on the Saturday, Jimmy running 7.50 in the 60m final to finish second behind Emilio Lavia of Brighton & Hove AC (both were given the same time putting them 13th in the national rankings), and Ella knocking a massive 0.5 secs off her PB to win the U15 60m in 8.23 secs putting her 37th in the national rankings. Emily Marchant also ran a big PB in the U15 Girls 60m.
Elsewhere there was a first county medal for Jacob Sutton in the U17 60m finishing 3rd in 7.71, and Chloe Rogers finishing 6th in the U15 60m Hurdles, both with big PBs and Chloe still only 12yrs old. . Richard Buckingham knocked 0.1 off his V40 PB running 7.86 secs in the 60m putting him 12th in the V40 national rankings, and Noel Butler performed well in his recent return to competition, winning the High Jump and placing second in the Long Jump.
Sundays events brought more success for the club with Imogen Marshall winning the U17 shot putt in 8.94m, Tristan Martin the U17s Long Jump with 5m 65cm and Mark Gibbs winning the Senior Mens Shot Putt and Triple Jump meaning he currently holds 7 county titles.
Excellent performances everybody, there’s nothing like a big PB to make all the hard training worthwhile!
Special Olympics Worthing took 2 teams to Portsmouth on Saturday to take part in the National Sporthall event where they competed against 15 teams from across the UK.

Being the first event of the season many of the team were quite nervous especially our six new athletes who were competing for the first time. They had no need as they got off to a good start and were soon clocking up personal bests. At the half way stage the ‘A’ team were lying in 3rd place and all athletes were enjoying the very noisy atmosphere. The competition finished with the relay events where double points were up for grabs, and the team were particularly keen to make amends in an event where they slipped up last year. Whilst the ‘B’ team had some nervous changeovers the ‘A’ team were flying, coming home in an excellent time to secure 2nd place in the competition.
Final Result
1st – Bournemouth – 204pts
2nd – Worthing ‘A’ – 162pts
3rd – Isle of Wight – 154pts
(Our ‘B’ team finished in 8th position)

It was a busy weekend around the county with the final cross country league at Lancing Manor and several Harriers running the Brighton Half Marathon.
Saturday brought a nice return to form for Lauren Bourne still in the U17′s age group, looking very strong to win the Senior Womens race from fellow Harrier Sharon Elder. The two Harriers had an excellent battle around the hilly 5K course and are both coming into some nice form for the upcoming track season.
In the vet mens categories Pete Lay retained his V50 league title with Paul Bond taking the V40 and Alan Clarke 2nd in the V60. Well done to all our cross country runners, there has been some excellent running throughout the winter.

Sunday brought fine running conditions for the Brighton Half Marathon. There was a good show of green vests and several PB performances.
Leading the 7,427 finishers was our own Matthew Dumigan racing in his duel club vest (Swansea Harriers) winning in a time of 1:08:41. The ever improving Henry Teague-Smith, was the first official Harrier with another great performance in his first Half Marathon.
This was also the first Half Marathon and longest ever run for several of our “new to distance running” Harriers who all dug deep to achieve some very respectable times, well done Team Green!
