Well done to the A team in their successful battle to avoid relgation.
A huge effort from everyone at Bedford resulted in 4th place and a crucial 2 points as other teams were being beaten in other matches.
With a team of sixteen athletes harriers set off on the long coach trip to Bedford knowing that the they were in a relegation zone to avoid the drop into Division 3. With several key members away and some injured we were always going to struggle in the middle distance races.
However with the young athletes league completed we were able to call on the clubs young sprinter to boost the team. The star single performance was from 15 year old Funmi Sobodu who only joined the club in June and running in his first race for the "A" team, Funmi ran a stunning 200m setting a personnel best time of 22.6 and winning the B string race. This time is only 3 tenths off the under 17 record set by Mark Fabes back in 1979.
The other highlight was the under 17 4 x 100m relay team of Lee Fulham, Ashille Niysonaba, Dave Morris and Funmi Sobodu breaking the u/17 club record but also bettering the time of the u/20 record set in 1999. This was some sort of consolation as this team were unlucky in not getting into the final top eight u/17 relay teams in the UK and missed out on a trip to Sheffield Athletics Grand Prix meeting being held on the Sunday.
Craig Baker and Alec Masson gained 47 points during the match with Alec just piping Craig for the most points gained over the six matches. A new name to watch out for in 2006 will be Dean Storry again only joining the club mid season, he had his first outing for the team and produced two p.b's winning the B string high jump with 1.80m and a third place in the triple jump 12.38m, Dean also ran a p.b in a non-scoring 200m. Another runner to gain two p.b's was Matt Cheal, although finishing 5th in both his race he lowered his times over 5,000m and 3,000mS/C by nearly half a minute.
Nearing the end of the match we were hoping for third spot, but in the end we finished a good forth place and had to wait until the evening to find out how other team performed to see what our fate was. In the end the two points we gained was enough to finish in seventeenth position, with the same match points as our near rivals Brighton who finished sixteenth.
