Saturday morning training run to Chanctonbury Ring - [21st May 2010] Chanctonbury Ring proved to be a welcome oasis on a very hot and sunny morning, but it was not too hard on the main group, who, frequently, had to wait for their coach. Check the Noticeboard for future training venues. |

Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships - 24th February 2010 - [1st Mar 2010] Harriers were again to the forefront of performances, when, in the mud and rain at the Sussex Schools (Years 7 & 8) cross country meeting at Christs Hospital School, India Spoor (Durrington), Leah Harris (Davison) and Imogen Marshall Durrington) all featured in the top twenty finishers, gaining selection for the Sussex team, which competes in the Inter-County Championships at Eastleigh on 6th March. The detailed results are not immediately available, but India won her race, followed closely by Leah in sixth place and Imogen in twelfth position. Also on duty was Tara Bage (Seaford College) in the Year 7 race, in which she finished in 24th place, just out of the top twenty, but close enough to be a possible reserve for the county team. |

It was not possible to form a complete club team, but the Harriers' name and colours were prominently displayed in the results, when Brit Saville finished in 19th place in the U20 Women's race. Her time for the 6K course was 24:12. In the Under 15 Girls 4K race, with a field of 360 runners, Megan Lillie recorded 16:40 in 142nd place and Lauren Bourne was 213th in 17:25. Naomi Lenane ran well to finish in 161st position out of 543, in the Senior Women's 8K race in a time of 35:00. Brooks Sussex Cross Country League (4) - [21st Feb 2010] Well it was an early start for a few of us, in order to get the course marked out, and, although there had been a reasonable frost, the sun was shining and it was promising to be a delightful day.
The races started with the Under 13 Girls 3.0km (1.8 miles) at 12.30, followed by the Under 13 Boys 3.0km (1.8 miles), the Under 15 Girls 4.0km (2.5 miles), the Under 15 Boys 4.5km (2.8 miles), the Under 17 Men 5.0km (3.0 miles), the Under 17, Under 20, Senior & Vet Women 5.0km (3.0 miles) and last but not least the Under 20, Senior & Vet Men with their 8.0km (5.0 miles) run.
Unfortunately as I write, I am not aware of all the results. However, I do understand that all the runners had great runs, on which was a quite difficult course and which was worsened in places by a local resident's garden fire and its consuming smoke.
India Spoor, in the Girls Under 13 race, romped home in second place with a time of 12.06.
In the Under 15 Girls event, Phina Sunderland made it home in second place with a time of 17.56 and only a 100 metres behind the winner.
For the Under 20 Women, Brittany Saville came first in a time of 19:41, with team mate, Abigail Fowlie, hot on her tail taking second in 20:21.
In the awards that followed, I think it is fair to say that the club can feel proud that several of the Harriers' runners managed to sweep a number of medals from the podium - so well done everyone. The girls outshone the boys in the end of season awards with Brittany securing Gold in the Under 20 Women's event, and Phina and India taking Bronze in the Under 15 and Under 13 Girls' events respectively. The U15G and SW teams both received Silver medals, whilst the U17W team was supreme and was presented with Gold medals.
All in all I think a great day was had by all, the course looked the part and compliments were made by many on how professional it looked and how effective the marshals were. Ideally, we needed 23 marshals, unfortunately and a little disappointedly on the day we only had 17 - so a big thankyou for all of the marshals who literally ran the extra mile in order to cover all the points and also for those who got collared on the day to marshal. This event was hosted by Worthing Harriers and without the support of marshals and all those behind the scene, these events would not take place - so again a big thankyou to all.

SOUTHWATER FUN RUN (X Country) SUNDAY 14th February 2010 - [14th Feb 2010] Well for the complete novice runner the word on the street was that this course on the first 3rd would be particularly muddy, and for the unsuspecting runner can become the Bermuda Triangle for running shoes, and well I have to say the course lived up to its reputation.
The day started with the weather conditions being generally favourable, a little cold maybe but generally clear and dry, however just as the we were contemplating doing some warm up routines, down came the snow, thankfully this was short lived.
As 10am fast approached all the runners made their way to the start line, this being a narrow lane which resembled the M25 at rush hour. At 10am prompt the horn was sounded and the race begun, and although the Harriers were well spread throughout the pack, a group of hard core Harriers managed to remain with the front runners, providing a very respectable finish for Worthing Harriers.
All in all a good run was had by all, well done to all the Worthing Harriers that competed, all and every one had a very respectable finish and are a credit to the club.
Although this felt like a marathon for me, clearly for some this was only a warm up run as 12 of the road runners then decided to run back home, they said it was for their marathon training, I think they are just mad!!!
As a finishing thought, thanks to Maureen for doing the organising for us runners.

Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships - [24th Jan 2010] The Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships had a new venue this year, Lancing Manor, and Brittany Saville got the meeting off to a good start and a local (Sion) victory, when she won the Senior Girls race. Another Harrier, Rebecca Moore, was third for Bishop Luffa College, whilst Amber Willard for Shoreham Academy, was tenth in what was a small line-up. Evidently, this was Brittany’s fifth successive win in these annual championships, but in progressive age groups, and she demonstrated her dominance this time with a margin of over a minute.
After the deluge the day before, the course dried out to some extent, but presented the runners with typical cross-country conditions, seriously muddy in places and with demanding twists, turns and uphill gradients. Surprisingly there were glimpses of blue sky on the day and, briefly, the sun shone, making it an enjoyable occasion, at least for the spectators.
In all, some twenty-two young Harriers were involved, representing either their college or their area. The girls produced the more impressive results with Josephine Sunderland (3rd), Lauren Bourne (5th), Megan Lillie (7th), Emily Moore (9th), Rachel Gifford (18th), Amber Wallace (24th) and Sophie Williams (38th), all representing West Sussex South in the Inter Girls race and bringing their team home in second place behind Ouse Valley. India Spoor (4th) led her West Sussex South team to sixth place in the Junior Girls race, ably supported by Harriers, Leah Harris (23rd), Imogen Marshall (26th) and Millie Williams (53rd).
John Morrey (17th) was the sole representative for Northbrook College in the Senior Boys contest and, although there is some uncertainty about the team positions in the other boys’ events, Ryan Todd (19th) definitely contributed to South Downs fourth place, whilst Henry Teague-Smith (20th) , Ollie Graveson (29th) and Kristian Musgrave (48th) ran well in the Inter Boys race for West Sussex South. Tom Lankshear (26th) and Ben Sunderland (54th), both lacking race fitness, finished strongly from a line-up of around ninety starters in the Junior Boys’ race.
The first twenty finishers in each race have been asked to represent the County at an Inter-Counties meeting at Reigate Priory on 6th February. Twelve Harriers appear to have qualified.

Brooks Sussex Cross Country League meeting on 16th January 2010 - [18th Jan 2010] With the improvement in the weather conditions, it was a routine journey to get to the league meeting at Bexhill, postponed from the previous week, but the course had suffered from the melting snow and produced a veritable mud bath. This is all explained away by the comment that these are normal cross-country conditions and the Harriers certainly thrived on them, notching up three team firsts – predictably all of the female kind. Under 15s: Josephine-Joy Sunderland (3rd), Lauren Bourne (6th) & Megan Lillie (8th), Under 17s: Amber Wallace (2nd), Rachel Gifford (3rd) & Amber Willard (4th) and Seniors: Brittany Saville (2nd), Rebecca Moore (16th) & Helen Pellett (42nd).
The Under 13 Girls were 4th team home, led by India Spoor in 4th place, followed by Imogen Marshall (19th) & Leah Harris (21st) and the Under 17 Men’s team of Henry Teague-Smith (12th), Glen Batchelor (14th) & Marcus Stainsby (15th) were 3rd in their race.
Most of the supporting Harriers improved on their previous performances and the scene is set for an exciting finish to the season at the last league meeting at Lancing Manor next month, when several individual and team medals are there to be won.
Many of the male Harriers were conspicuous by their absence, there being no Under 13 Boys and only two Senior/Veteran Men.

Brooks Sussex Cross Country Championships on Saturday, 2nd January 2010 - [6th Jan 2010] Thirty-six Harriers represented the club at Stanmer Park, where the conditions were generally favourable – very cold, but plenty of sunshine. Much of the course remained frozen, but parts became cut up and muddy as the day progressed, making the Seniors’ task a bit more demanding than for the earlier runners.
The Under 13 Girls went first and the Harriers had four finishers in the top twenty – India Spoor (5th), Leah Harris (15th), Emma Spoor (17th) and Imogen Marshall (20th). The “A” team (first three finishers for the club) only just missed claiming Bronze by two points.
The Under 15 Girls shone as usual, taking Team Gold, with Megan Lillie (5th), Emily Moore (9th)and Lauren Bourne (10th).
Had the Under 17 Women been able to produce a third runner, they would have certainly gained a team medal, there being only one club having the requisite number of finishers. As it was, Amber Willard and Rachel Gifford did well to finish in (8th) and (11th) places, respectively.
The Under 20 Women almost predictably dominated their particular medal harvest, but missed Gold. Abigail Fowlie outshone her club mate on this occasion, taking Silver to Brittany’s Bronze. They featured significantly in the Senior Women’s team race and, backed by Deborah Cawdery (23rd)and Helen Pellett (43rd ), finished just out of the medals in fourth place.
The male kudos goes to Matt Dumigan, who fought a good 12000m (7½ miles) battle, just slipping to third place and a bronze medal, in the closing stages of the race. He led a team of Mark Burchett, Pete Lay, Franklin Cheung (from our Hong Kong Branch), Adam Stephens and Grant Patterson, which achieved a creditable sixth place out of a field of over a hundred runners.
