Inter Counties Competition 19.6.2010 - [21st Jun 2010]
Three of our hammer squad were in action at this meeting and some fine performances were produced.

Robert Duke had a steady card though was disappointed with his performance. Starting with a 54m on his 1st throw a NT on his 2nd and a 57.15m on his 3rd.

Rob also was a guest in the Shot Put and if he had been the scoring athlete would have come second. However he still broke the club record of 13.85m held by Josh Lamb since 16.5.1999 with a new club record of 13.91m. Well done Rob.

Sophie Williams has started to turn up the heat with her hammer throwing. With a PB last week this had her all fired up to do better this week. The start was one that Sophie did not want though as it was a NT, the 2nd 20.63m but encouraged on by Eloise finished with a new PB of 25.96m. Well done Sophie.

Eloise was in action again throwing very well herself, as well as encouraging Sophie. Eloise had a steady but good card this week though no PB. Starting with a 27.36m 2nd 29.68m and finishing with a 32.38m. I know she was a little disappointed with her result as she was looking for a 35m this week end.

However both Eloise and Sophie have done themselves proud, as this is the first time either of them had competed at this level of competition and they came away with a very good result indeed. To see other athletes around them fall apart and for them to hold their nerve and stand tall (well Sophie stood tall) above the rest was excelent.

I finish today’s bit of news with what I think is a fantastic achievement by the hammer Squad. The last couple of years we have had three throwers qualify for the English Schools. However this year we have Five hammer throwers going to the English Schools. Well done to you all, I don’t know of any other club who has had such a large contingent taking part in the English Schools in the throws event.

The Names of the people taking part are :-

Woody Cox. Eloise Marshall, Robert Duke, Simon Evans & Matthew Evans

Good luck to you all, remember to enjoy the whole experience and enjoy yourselves as you are the ones who have worked hard for it.

LATE NEWS :- The U17, U15 & U13 match on Sunday 20.6.2010 Laura Phipps had a well deserved PB in the discus of 16.80m. Well done Laura keep up the good work.

Sussex Schools Championships 12.6.2010 - [14th Jun 2010]

The hammer throwers led the way this weekend with some of the most impressive throwing so far this year.

PB’s fell like rain, medals were in abundance and the icing on the cake, a New Sussex Schools Championship record. In amongst all that was the fact that five of the athletes all reached the English Schools Standards.

The day started with Eloise, Sophie and Woody. Sophie started her campaign with good consistent throws gradually working her way to a new pb of 24.54m and a silver medal. If that was not enough she has been picked to represent Sussex in the inter counties match next week. Woody went from strength to strength breaking pb after pb to finish the day with a 39.42m a massive 4.61m improvement and the English schools qualifying standard. Woody won a Bronze medal and a 1st reserve place next week for the inter counties match. Eloise was all fired up and was trying to achieve the English schools standard herself. With a steady start a hic cup in the middle and the pressure was on the last throw. Stepping up she nailed a fantastic 34.24m. Eloise had archived her goal, the English Schools standard, won a gold medal, and will also be representing Sussex in the intercounties. This was another marvellous pb improvement of 3.31m.

The three older members of the squad took up the challenge next, with Simon and Matthew and Robert. Simon and Matthew have been working so hard this year and throwing well in practise but unable to take that through to the competition. Well Simon made the break through this week beating his brother on this occasion with a 49.94m. Matthew will not take that lying down though and will be back soon. Watch this space. Robert took to the stage with a very laid back approach to the day but then proceeded to set the place on fire with a magnificent display of throwing. Starting with a 54.57m and from there to finish with a brilliant throw of 59.40m and a New Sussex Schools Championship record. Robert also won the gold medal and is now ranked No3 in the UK rankings and will be taking part in the intercounties match on Saturday as well as the English Schools Championships in July.

The WDH have the largest competing contingent of throwers I have seen at any event I have attended. I was so glad to be there to see this exiting display throwing. Well done to you all it was fantastic to watch.

NYAL Match 1 Winchester 2.5.2010 - [5th May 2010]

On a very cold, wet and miserable day, the WDH turned out a great team for their first match of the season. The match turned out to be a very closely fought one, where WDH finished in a well deserved first place.

The throwers sent a strong squad of young enthusiastic athletes and again had some very good results and PB’s.

The hammer event commenced proceedings in the cold rain and wind but this did not deter the squad. Robert Duke won his U17 campaign with a Grade 1 throw of 52.72m, this was swiftly followed by Eloise Marshall wining her U17 section with a throw of 30.91m and a new PB, which also moved her up to a well deserved Grade 3. Woody Cox was not to be left out here and also won his U15 section with a throw of 33.91m and a new PB. Woody also moved up a Grade to a Grade 3.

The discus event also had some fine results with Robert continuing his fine form in the U17 section with a winning Grade 3 throw of 36.65m. U17 girls Charlotte Barnott-Cottle wining her section with a throw of 19.53m and in 2nd place Sophie Williams with a PB throw of 13.27m. U15 Woody Cox finished in 2nd place in his section with a under par throw by his standards of 17.29m. The U15 girls were not to be out done as Lianne Baker won her section with a throw of 17.46m and in 2nd place Miranda Garratt with a throw of 17.12m.

The shot had more fantastic performances and again that man Robert Duke was on fire. Robert won the U17 shot with a Grade 1 throw and new PB of 13.52m. U17 girls led the way with Eloise wining her section with a new PB throw of 6.35m and in 2nd place Charlotte with a throw of 6.03m. The U15 men Ellis Lockwood had a fine winning Grade 3 throw of 11.08m which is also a new PB for him, with Woody Cox taking 2nd place with a throw of 8.65m. The U15 girls Lianne Baker finished in 3rd Place with a throw of 6.55m and Emily Baker finished in 5th place with a throw of 4.82m. Newcomer U13 Jimmy Seacombe won his section with a great PB throw of 6.38m in his first competition. U13 girls also had a great competition with Emily Marchant wining with a PB and a Grade 4 throw of 6.34m and in 2nd place Lucy Pinkney with a new PB throw of 5.91m. Well done to the U13 Girls & Boys.

The javelin event was well represented by the girls but the men’s contribution was poorly attended. U17 girls Natalie Sampson took 1st place with a throw of 20.44m and in 2nd place Eloise with a throw of 18.31m. U15 girls also did very well with Ella Spalding wining with a throw of 12.57m and Emily Baker in 2nd place with a throw of 10.32m. The only young man competing in this event was Sam Marsden in the U15’s and he finished in 1st place with a throw of 32.50m

Well done to you all, the throws events were well attended and had some fantastic results which helped secure WDH first place position. This is a team event and you all pulled together to make the day a good one. You should all be very proud of yourselves.

WDH Awards Night 23.4.2010 - [3rd May 2010]

The throwers again were high up the order for great 2009 performances.

Four members of our outstanding Squad picked up some of the best prizes going.

Woody Cox won best U13 performance for his fantastic Discus throw of 28.92m that gave him a new club record and to finish the year ranked No 7 in the UK. This made Woody a Grade 1 in this event. He also won an award for the best overall U13 field performance for his Discus. Other unmentioned achievements on the night were that he had a best of 8.71m in the Shot and a Grade 2, 24.67m Javelin and a Grade 4 and another terrific performance in the hammer throw of 28.99m and a Grade 4. Well done Woody very well deserved.

To say that Woody was happy about his awards would be an understatement, he was grinning from ear to ear all evening and he just would not put his cup down. You can see this in the photos.

Eloise Marshall was not to be left out either, winning the best U15 performance for her remarkable season of Hammer throwing. Eloise went from strength to strength and PB to PB to win the award. Starting the season with a PB of 25.40m followed by a further 6 PB’s to finish the season with a massive 37.21m an improvement of almost 12metres. This also earned her a new club record and a Grade 2 in this event. Other unmentioned achievements on the night were that Eloise is the county champion and won Bronze in the SEAA Championships and to finish the season ranked No 8 in the UK. Well done Eloise another well deserved result.

Robert Duke was next up for another remarkable season. Robert would be the first to admit his hammer season was one of mixed emotions for him. However what a season he had. Starting the season with the new weight hammer (5k previous year 4k) and a throw of 40.34m and to go on to have 10 PB’s to finish the season with a massive 53.64m, an improvement of 13.30m is an outstanding achievement that won him the best U17 performance. Other unmentioned achievements on the night were that Robert had a best of 12.89m shot and a Grade 2 in the event, 39.67m Discus and a Grade 2 with a best in Javelin of 35.92m. Robert finished the season ranked 17 in the UK and a Grade 1 Hammer thrower. Wow, watch this space. A fantastic season Rob well done.

Jo Davison better known as sportyJo to her friends was next up for her best performance Veteran Woman. A remarkable season for Jo finishing with her defence of her 2005 Gold medal winning performance in Melbourne Australia. Jo had trained hard all year and had some ups and downs throughout the season but also had some remarkable results for all her hard work she had put in. Starting the year by becoming Sussex County Champion she went on to SEAA Senior Champion. Jo had another PB of 50.13m and also become the UK’s Masters Champion. Jo then went to Taipei and started her campaign with the Discus and a PB of 34.19m. The hammer event however did not go to plan. Jo had a disastrous start with 3 no throws that she thought had ended her competition. However as the numbers were low for the final, all throwers had 6 throws so Jo went out and beat her fellow Brits and a Russian to take the bronze medal with a throw of 47.06m. As she said ‘‘it was not pretty, it was not my best, I cannot believe I got the Bronze’’
Jo’s other achievements were she finished the season ranked 25 in the UK (hearing) and a Grade 1 hammer thrower, No1 in the UK Deaf rankings, No 3 in Europe Deaf rankings and also No 3 in the World Deaf rankings. A remarkable achievement if I say so myself, Oh I just did.
Although I know Jo was bitterly disappointed with her Taipei result, no one can know the pressures of competing at International Level unless you have been there and done so yourself. I know that this pressure wore Jo down over the months leading up to Taipei, the thought of her defending her crown and the expectations of others was a great burden for her to bear. I am sure you will all join me in saying to come back from 3 no throws and get a Bronze medal at that level is no mean feat and that she should be proud of the fact that she did. Well done Jo fantastic.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the coaching team who give their help throughout the year, and a big thank you to the parents who have supported their young athletes. Without it their children would not be where they are now.

As always, keep up the good work Squad.

Eric

Good news for the throws squad this week. - [19th Apr 2010]

First, A big congratulations to Derek Baker for passing his Level 2 coaching assessment on Tuesday evening. Derek has been working with the squad for some time now and had felt he would like to further develop his coaching skills, so the move too Level 2 was the next step in his coaching pathway. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Derek all the very best for the future.

K2 & Havant Open Meeting 18.4.2010

The throws squad were back in action again over the week end, some were at Havant and the rest at K2. Mixed fortunes for the squad this time, though there were PB’s to be had by some of the squad.

Eloise Marshall and Her sister Imogen were two of the squad that went to compete at Havant. Eloise was one of the squad who came back with a big smile on her face, A new PB for her in the hammer of 28.36m and to add to this a PB in the Javelin of 20.20m. Imogen could not compete in the Discus this time but took part in the High Jump and equalled her PB of 1.35m and 12.36m in the javelin.

Sophie Williams did not have a good competition and put it down too ‘She missed our company’ (ahhhh) is’rnt that sweet. Woody Cox is turning into a younger version of Robert Duke as he too likes to keep everybody on the edge of their seat. Woody knows the distance is there but is just trying a little too hard at the moment. Chin up Woody it will happen, ask Rob. Simon & Matthew had throws around the 47m area but again were disappointed with the results.

Emily Baker found her form and produced a hammer PB of 26.60m, well done Emily you have worked hard to get that result and sister Lianne had a great consistent card of Discus throws all around the 18m plus and big smiles all round. They went on to the Shot and Emily had another PB of 4.71m, Lianne followed her sister with a PB of 6.35m, Miranda 5.72m a PB for Woody 8.28m and Ellis 11.07m.

Well done to you all, If you have any photos that you would like added to our web page please email them to me and I will add them for you.

K2 Pre Session Open 28.3.2010 - [29th Mar 2010]
The throws squad were in action again over the weekend, though a few of the regulars were unavailable due to other commitments.

The squad decided to take part in Shot, Discus and Hammer and everyone enjoyed the challenge of taking part in an event that they do not normally compete in.

The Hammer competition started the day of with Lianne, Emily, Eloise, Woody and Simon taking part, but unfortunately Jo could not compete due to an Achilles injury that flared up during the week.

Emily Baker had a consistent card and a new PB 25.43m and finished 2nd, her sister Lianne followed suit with a PB 18.28 and finished 3rd. Eloise Marshall had a steady start and a big hic cup in the middle but finished strong with a 27.86m to finish 2nd . Woody Cox who struggled with the Hammer at last weeks meeting was determined that was not going to happen this week and had two PB’s 24.99m and finished with 25.22m to win him 1st place and a big smile to go with it. Simon Evans did not want to be left out of the PB’b this week and on his first throw had his first PB this year with 47.44m and a consistent card of throws around the 47m mark to give him 2nd place.

The Shot saw Emily have a best of 4.62m and finished 7th, Lianne had a best of 6.22 and a 4th place, Imogen Marshall had a 5.99m and 5th place while big Sis Eloise had a best of 5.95 and a 1st place. New to the throwing squad U13 Emily Hammond put on a terrific display with 7.00m throw and a 1st place. Woody had another great card all 8m plus and another 1st place with a throw of 8.63m.

Discus, Woody again (boring) led the way with another great throw and a PB of 25.33m and Lianne started to show a return to form with a throw of 18.66m. Simon unfortunately had to pull out after the second round due to injury. I would tell you the rest of the squad’s scores but if I do I am sure they will hit me so I am not going to chance it.

Well done to you all, keep up the good work.

Kingston Harriers Throws Meeting - [22nd Mar 2010]

A good size contingent of throwers descended on the Epsom & Ewell Harriers ground on Sunday for their first competition of the year.

The first two girls to take part were Emily Baker and Sophie Williams both competing in the hammer event. Emily started her new season with a consistent card and a new PB 21.82m and a big smile to go with it.

Sophie also started her season well and is now getting to grips with the new weight as a U17 athlete. Sophie came away with 4 Pb’s the best being 22.66m which is almost the same distance as she threw last season with the 3k hammer. If anybody did not already know, it is Sophies Birthday today (22.3.2010) So a big Happy Birthday to her from all the squad and thank you Sophie for the cakes, hmmm scrummy.

Continuing with the girls, Eloise Marshall and Jo Davison were next and the good form continued. Eloise coming back from a broken ankle which has kept her away from training until very recently had an astounding day. Eloise has also moved up to the new weight as a U17 athlete and has copped remarkably well. Eloise had five PB’s the best being 28.03m and was one of the best performances of the day.

Jo, who is working hard with her speed and four turns this season, had a good start to the season and felt she had made progress in the competition with a best of 44.71m. Jo went on to Discus and almost beat her PB of last year with a best throw of 33.96m and a big smile to go with it.

Lianne Baker had to wait all-day for her competition but it was worth the wait as she also had a PB 18.54m in the Discus. Lianne has worked hard to get further with her throws so all the hard work is paying off.

Woody Cox and Ellis Lockwood both U15 athletes coped with the new Discus weight well. Woody had several PB’s and a best of 25m plus and Ellis followed suite and with a best of 31m plus. Both these athletes have not done a lot of training with the Discus so that was a great result for them both.

Woody, not satisfied with that moved onto the Shot and again had several PB’s and a best of 8.88m which was a surprise for him as he felt he would not be able to get it that far. Woody also went on to the hammer event which in practise he has been throwing 35m plus but was bitterly disappointed as he could not get it right on the day. However he must take heart from the fact that he had a PB of 28.99m at the end of last season with a 3k hammer and now is using a 4k hammer and is throwing 6m further. I know there is a lot more to come yet, so chin up Woody there is plenty of time.

Robert Duke had a great start to his season with the Shot, a new PB 13.06m and would have been 14.02m if he had stayed in the circle but hey, we are talking about Rob here. Rob went on to the hammer and had three throws over 50m with a best of 51.54m. A good start for Rob and a good base to work on especially when you think back to last season when he had all sorts of problems until three quarters of the way through the season when he managed to turn things around. Rob went on to Discus but has not done any Discus since the end of last season but still managed a best of 36.93m.

Matthew and Simon Evans took up the challenge and were a little disappointed with their performance but still had distances in the mid forty’s with Simon having a best of 45.67m and Matthew just getting the better of Simon with a 45.76m. I really felt for these guys as they have trained so hard and thrown well in practise but the nerves just robbed them of a result they deserve. As with Woody it will not be long before it goes right for these guys so watch this space.

Finally another great bit of news from the Light Hammer competition which the squad took part in at the beginning of February. Team 1, consisting of Matthew Evans, Simon Evans, Robert Duke and Jo Davison finished in 8th place in the UK, Team 2, consisting of Woody Cox, Lianne Baker, Emily Baker and Sophie Williams finished in 20th place in the UK.

A great start to the season well done to everyone in the Squad, let’s keep building on this guys your hard work is paying off.

Eric
