National Under 15 Championships - Bedford 21st/22nd August - [25th Aug 2010]
Beth Close rounded off her track season in record breaking form at the National Champs in Bedford this weekend. The squad motto"Pain is only temporary pride is forever" really was apt in Beths case. On Saturday she had the pain off watching a year younger team mate Sophie Spinner set a new PB of 12.69 and make the final of the 100m ;Sophie finishing 8th in her first year in this age group.
Beth`s coaching team and family spent the night and next morning getting her head right and dealing with the disappointment of the Saturday and it paid dividends as she eased into the final along with Sophie S. The national final of the 200m for under 15 girls now had two sprinters from Worthing taking part. Coming off the bend behind the countries number one and winner of Saturdays gold in the 100m she held form and comfortably won silver in a PB of 25.47 breaking her own club record. Sophie finished 6th with yet another year to go in this age group.
Beth now adds this her best individual medal to the double gold at the counties, silver at the Southerns and Gold as part of the relay team at English Schools, throw in two club records that had stood for over 30 years each for a fitting end to the track season

No 1 in Europe - Harriers European or is it the World Record Holder ! - [17th Aug 2010]
A fantastic end to the season for CP35 (Cerebral Palsy) athlete Sophia Warner saw her climb to the heady heights of number 1 in the world for a mere 12 hours.
It all began on Wednesday evening at the Brighton Open meeting at Withdean as she set a new PB of 18.02, from 18.39. in the 100m. However the rankings list was updated overnight and at the other side of the world, an Australian had reduced it to 17.37.
Those of us who know sizzling Sophia knew this would be like a red rag to a bull as she lined up at Crystal Palace I.P.C. event on Sunday 15th August the final major meet of the year.
The result - another huge PB of 17.72 secs whilst not good anough to reclaim the World Record it is a new European record! Sophia has now acheived A standards in both the 100 and 200m ready for the World Champs in New Zealand in January. Selection is made in September and should see Sophia a U.K.A. funded athlete and the proud owner of a GB vest.
Sophia trains with the Type2B squad twice a week and has knocked 4 seconds off her time since starting with the squad. Her results are due to her sheer determination and commitment and she is a role model for the younger athletes in the Type2B squad. Well done Sophia.

Harriers Golden Girls! - [11th Jul 2010]
The culmination of hard training and great team work resulted in a gold medal in the 4 x 100m relay for four Under 15 Worthing Harriers Type2B sprinters at the English Schools Championships held at Birmingham Alexander Stadium on Friday and Saturday 9th/10th July.
Sophie Spinner (13), Georgina Hook (14) , Bethany Close (14) and Anna Short (13) had all been selected to represent Sussex for the 4 x 100m Junior Girls relay due to their domination at local athletics competitions competing for Worthing Harriers.
At Birmingham, they were against fourteen of the best teams in the Country and again showed their perfected technique to win their semi-final race in a blistering time of 49.08 seconds to set a new Sussex County Relay record and Worthing Harriers Record.
The four Harriers then stepped up to the added pressure with the finals televised live on SKY Sports on the Saturday afternoon.
With eight teams in the final and in front of a screaming crowd, people at home watching on TV, they stormed home beating their semi-final record time set the day previously in a new County Under 17 and Under 15 girls record time of 48.79 seconds.
This record was last set in 1989 and was previously 50.3 seconds.
The silver and bronze medals went to Humberside and Surrey with times 48.93 and 49.00 secs respectively.
The "Fab Four", as they are locally known, have now beaten all previous relay records for the Worthing Harriers Under 15 Girls, Under 17 Women, Under 20 Women and now the Senior Women age groups in one season's running! Unfortunately, the foursome will only be able to compete as a relay team until the end of this 2010 season as Bethany and Georgie will move up to the next competing age group.

The girls are due to race again at this weekends National Young Athletics League meeting held at Worthing where they should again show their dominance at their home venue.

More Sprints Successes - Southern Champs 29th May and a new Under 13 Hurdling Star! - [9th Jun 2010]
In conditions more like mid February Beth Close acheived her best result yet at the South of England Champs at Ashford this weekend. With strong headwinds of up to 4.5 on the windscale and rain - time spent in the gym paid dividends as Beth was pipped of a silver medal by just 3 one hundreths of a second and had to settle for bronze in a time of 12.80 secs in the 100m final. Team mate Georgie Hook also made the final 8 of the best in the South of England which covers an area from Norwich to Cornwell finishing 7th. Anna Short a year younger did well in her semi coming 5th.
Lucy Pinkney (pictured) meanwhile moved up into the top 20 of the U13G national rankings in the week in the Sussex U13 League. Her win in the 70m hurdles was not only a PB but in what is becoming a habit at the Type2B squad equaled the club record set a year before Lucy was born.

CLEAN SWEEPS IN SPRINTS SEES 129 YEARS WORTH OF RECORDS GO AS U15G MAKE HISTORY AS SUSSEX CHAMPS - [11th May 2010]
In the space of just 48 hours at the Sussex County Championships at the K2 Crawley over the weekend, Worthing Harriers’ U15G sprinters wiped away a total of 129 years worth of records.
Bethany Close will claim the 100m and 200m records but her teammates Sophie Spinner, Georgie Hook and Anna Short pushed her all the way then teamed up together to win relay gold and further records.Bar one all records beat were set long before the girls were born. In the case of two records Beth’s mum was only 7 years old and Georgia’s mum was yet to be born!!
In the 100m on Saturday the girls finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th (Beth, Georgie, Sophie and Anna respectively). Beth’s time of 12.4 beat the Club Record set in 1978, 32 years ago. All four girls achieved PBs.
Sunday saw the 200m and relays and yet again the girls lived up to expectations – those who thought it couldn’t get any better watched on in amazement.
Beth again doubled up with gold as last year, this time smashing the Club 200m Record last set in 1973, 37 years ago. With a run of 25.8. This time Sophie took silver, despite Georgie coming within 2/10ths of the record herself in the heats she had to settle for bronze. Anna, the youngest, came 5th – a small consolation for Anna was that her times this year would have won the double last year!
The icing on the cake which sent all four girls home happy was the 4x100m Relay - equalling the Championship Record set in 1992, 18 years ago. Sussex has never seen the likes of the Sussex girls as a quartet in the same age group, who bettered not only the Club’s U15 relay record set in 2004 but also beat the U17W (1974) and U20W (1974) records with a time of 50.8.
Alan Denyer and Steve Spinner praised the girls’ work ethic and the rest of the Type2B sprints squad at Worthing, who all contribute to the happy band which saw all who compete attain PBs.
“Myself and Steve tried walking on water at the end of the day but only succeeded in getting wet feet and had to make do with a very large pinch” said Alan “This is scary – Sophie and Anna are a year younger at thirteen and are running faster times than Beth at this time last year. Watch this space!”
