Sussex Championship Reports - [13th May 2008]
The young endurance group wore the club colours proudly at the weekend with 14 personal bests being achieved and 7 medals won by the 12 athletes competing.
On Saturday fantastic performances by Marcus Stainsby and Ryan Marsden in the Under 15 Boys 800m, saw them shatter their personal bests. Marcus ran 2:16.8, taking a huge 8 seconds off his best. If it wasn't for a slight pull in his calf, he would have finished higher and been faster than the 5th place he achieved. Ryan went even better in breaking his personal best, bringing it down by 12 seconds to 2:23.0. Dan Colbourne also ran a personal best in scorching conditions taking his best down to 2:42.1. In the Under 17 Men Tom Marsden completely dominated the event cruising through is heat in 2:06. Then again in the Final he led from start to finish, taking the Gold by 5 seconds in 1:58.4. There were also huge personal bests in the Under 15 Girls 1500m. Charlie Firth took some 9 seconds off her best to run 5:16 having only returned to training a couple of weeks ago after a bout of injury and illness. Amber Wallace scorched round the track lowering her best by an incredible 12 seconds, when running 5:27. Lauren Bourne completed a stunning day of personal bests as she ran through in a new time of 5:32.
If Saturday was great, then Sunday was unbelievable - not just just in terms of the weather! Ryan Marsden soared over 1.42m in the Under 15 Boys High Jump, after swimming for an hour, to gain Silver behind his club mate Ryan Smith!
Like Tom the previous day Abi Fowlie flew round the Under 17 Women 800m, leading from the start to gain Gold and smashing her best by 4 seconds in 2:17.3. She was closely followed by Britt Saville who also took 4 seconds off her best as she stormed passed Crawley's Niamh MacCoilte in the last 30 metres to take Silver in 2:19.8. Becka Moore battled through in the heat to finish 6th in 2:26.
Not to be out done in medal terms, Becka then took on not only the oven like heat, but also the Under 20 and Senior Women in the 3000m just 2 hours after the 800m! The heat should have taken its toll but Becka ran a stunning race to take Gold in the Under 17 Women 3000m in a personal best time 11:07.4.
More amazing performances were achieved in the Under 15 Girls 800m as 5 of the group took part. Megan Lillie's battling and gutsy performance earned a tremendous time in the conditions of 2:45. Katie Summerfield had earlier shot round the 200m heats in a new personal best of 28.4 and missed out qualifying for the final by 1 tenth of a second! She then rose to the occasion again in the 800m taking her best down to 2:37 in a race that saw 4 Harriers come through within 7 seconds of each other. Only 1 second behind Katie was Amber Wallace, producing another fabulous personal best time of 2:38, having taken 4 seconds off her best. Emily completed the quartet in 2:39 as she worked hard all the way round. However, Charlie Firth produced her best performance to date in holding off one of the favourites for a medal to take Bronze in another personal best of 2:32.
Tom Marsden produced a great performance to take a 800m and 1500m double in the Under 17 Men, sitting on the shoulder of his main opposition for 700m before taking complete control of the race, making bursts to shake things up and turning in a best performance of 4:09.4 to take the Gold in a tremendous race.

National Young Athletes League meeting at Lewes - [6th May 2008]
The young Harriers started their Southern Division One East campaign eagerly enough, but despite thirty-four first places and innumerable P.B.s, the team finished fourth and last in a very closely fought match against host club, Lewes, Chichester and Orion. There were only fifty-four points separating the winning and losing teams – the margins being 16.5, 16 and 21.5 points.
With athletes moving up an age category from last season, the Harriers’ team had insufficient Under 17s to cover every event and the Under 13s needed more support.
On the bright side however, there were forty graded performances, measured by UKA Common Standards – the two Grade 2 levels inevitably attained by Tom Marsden for his 52.5s 400m and Brittany Saville for her 4m:52.7s 1500m, which, of course, were winning times.
Mention must be made also of U13s, Sophie Spinner and Imogen Marshall, U15s, Lewis Cullen, Craig Dummer, Marcus Stainsby, Robert Duke, Charlie Clayton and Tom Burrows-Gibbs and U17s, Alison Moore and Jessica Patterson, all of whom registered multiple first places. The Under 15 Boys also acquitted themselves superbly by winning both their relay races.
Shouts of “Come on Lewes” from our supporters might have been misconstrued and it should be emphasised that the encouragement was for Lewis not Lewes.
The next two league meetings for Worthing will be home fixtures on 18th May and 1st June, but sadly to be arranged at the Broadbridge Heath stadium, as the West Park track is not available on those dates. The club hopes to have an even stronger team in depth for these matches.

SportyJo's Open Meeting - [21st Apr 2008]
Appalling weather spoilt what was a promising meeting, designed to provide early season competition for both able and impaired athletes. The persistent drizzle was accompanied by an inconsiderate and blustery east wind, which proved to be an additional problem for the sprinters and so it was for the middle-distance runners in the home straight. The throwers might have received some benefit from what was for them a tail wind, but the jumpers must have found it a very mixed blessing. Nevertheless, the athletes, who competed, got their Track and Field season underway and some encouraging performances were achieved.
The full detailed results can be found attached to the separate report on the meeting – see “Results”.

Training on the road - [17th Apr 2008]
The road running summer schedule for 2008 has now been published. We have introduced a few different sessions, so look out for the 'New for 2008' items. There is a brand new Summer Handicap, a one-off 'Not Christmas Handicap', following Mark Watson's hugely acclaimed 'Christmas Prom Handicap' and, of course, the well-trodden Grevitt. Note that there are two route-finding sessions for both the Grevitt and Summer Handicap this year. Hopefully, this will minimise the number of missing persons! Details for the new Lyons Farm (9 or 6.5 mile) Thursday training session on the 1st May and 12 June are now available.
Please find all of the details in downloadable pdf format in the "Entry Forms" section of this website.

Flora London Marathon - [17th Apr 2008]
The London Marathon was undertaken this year by seven Harriers, accompanied by April showers, but these did not dampen the determination of the runners. For some, like Linda James, it was their first marathon, whilst others, including Karen Pearcy, improved on their previous times. The indomitable pair romped home in under four and a half hours. See Results for more details.
