Another club record goes - [8th Sep 2010]
Edward Pillai had more than just a good day at Woking’s Open Meeting on 5th September. He threw his javelin to a personal best of 54.38m, which overtook the club’s Under 17 Men’s record of 53.24, held by Keith Beard since 1978.
Understandably, Edward is pleased with his performance, but so is his coach and mentor, Caroline Garratt, who praises his dedication and perseverance. With many more years until Edward reaches his peak, the sky is the limit, although the javelin will have to come to ground at some point, but where – 80m? 90m? – who knows?

MCCAINS NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE - [2nd Jul 2010]
The young athletes were at Guildford again last Sunday – this time competing against Aldershot & Farnham and the Isle of Wight, both strong teams. AFD won the match convincingly and we failed to fend off IOW, trailing at the end of the day, by just fourteen points. AFD: 547, IOW: 460, WDH: 446.
These are the points, which determine league position, and we have slipped to fifth place. However, it is not all doom and gloom. There were some especially good performances, three of which were Grade 1 – two by the “Duke” and one by Jimmy Seacombe, whose U13B 100m time gained him Harriers’ “Male Athlete of the Match”. The title of Harriers’ “Female Athlete of the Match” goes to Cienna Edwards for her Grade 2, U15G 800m performance, in which she pushed the AFD race favourite to the line.
The Harriers’ results can be found attached to the Match Report for the meeting. Our final NYAL meeting will be on Sunday, 18th July, at home against Chichester and Havant. For this match, we want every event covered to finish the league programme on a “high”.

Sussex Road Relay Championships - Saturday, 10th April 2010 - [12th Apr 2010]
Although not the most successful of days at Christ’s Hospital School, there were a number of medals won by Harriers at this most attractive of venues, in particularly pleasant weather conditions.
The Under 13 Boys were unable to produce a complete team, but Joe Lillie and Jack Woods had good runs and valuable first experience of road relays. Although in sixth place, the Under 13 Girls were not far off the pace. Led by Leah Harris, Tara Bage, who greatly improved her time of last year, and Erin Bateman, all put in good performances.
The Under 15 Girls showed their strength, particularly Emily Moore, who ran the last, and third fastest, leg and brought the team home in first place. Lauren Bourne and Megan Lillie played their part (every lap is critical) and shared the spoils. Their male counterparts were not far off the medals, but fourth place is not quite good enough, despite very strong efforts by Ryan Todd, Tom Lankshear and Ollie Graveson. There was even a “B” team, which finished sixth, consisting of the dependable brothers Musgrave (Kristian and Ben) and the indomitable Abdul Ogunlayi.
Whilst second place is not the preferred result, the Senior Women’s “A” team of Rachael Ogden, Abigail Fowlie and Brittany Saville had the consolation of being runners-up to the record-breaking trio from Arena 80, which included Fiona Clarke, who also made up a non-scoring Harriers’ “C” team by running the last leg. This gave Rachel Gifford and Amber Willard the opportunity to put in two good runs on the first and second legs. Rachael Ogden registered the third fastest lap for this race, but it was behind Fiona’s best lap time, achieved in the first leg for her club, Arena 80. Amidst all this interest, the Harriers had a “B” team, Rebecca Moore, Amber Wallace and Naomi Lenane, who all ran well to finish in eighth position.
The senior Men nearly achieved a “result”, but the leading teams had strength in depth. Matt Dumigan’s fastest lap of 9.44 was not that far off the course record, but the determined contributions of Tom Marsden, Mark Burchett, Adam Stainsby, Franklin Cheung and John Morrey were not enough to progress further than fifth place. The “B” team of Marcus Stainsby, Henry Teague-Smith, Grant Patterson and Tom Marsden was non-scoring by virtue of three of them having to run more than one leg.
The Veterans or Masters acquitted themselves well, when both Over 50s, Pete Seth, Graham Morrey and Keith Fillingham and Over 60s John Crosby, Roger Wickham and John Evans brought their teams through in ninth position, respectively.
It was an enjoyable day and the Harriers' performances are attached to the "Match Report" under Results.

Chichester Challenge - [3rd Apr 2010]
The Harriers’ contingent to this event maintained the usual high standard by collecting eleven medals, six individual and five for the team award.
The team medals went to the five members of the Worthing Ladies Sports Team, which convincingly won the Corporate Challenge Women’s Team event. Not surprisingly, Rachael Ogden led from the front – she was the fastest lady overall – and she was supported in the series of three races by Brittany Saville, Rebecca Moore, Amber Wallace and Rachel Gifford. With her contribution, Brittany ran the third fastest 4,500m. The team’s overall aggregate time was some eight minutes faster than the runners-up.
Individually, there were two gold medals, both in the Junior races. India Spoor collected hers in the Year 8 Girls event and Tom Lankshear won his in the Year 9 Boys’ event. Theirs were the aggregate of the two best times in their respective age groups.

and - [3rd Apr 2010]
there were three silver medals – Leah Harris was runner-up to India and Emily Moore won her award in the Year 10 Girls event. The Year 10 Boys’ silver went to Ryan Todd. Not to be outdone, Megan Lillie picked up a bronze medal, when her aggregate time was only ten seconds behind Emily’s.
Although there were no prizes for the third placed Sports/College/Schools team, mention must be made of the Worthing Hares, Mark Burchett, Tom Marsden, Michael DiLaura, John Morrey and Henry Teague-Smith, who combined to ward off several strong teams.

A busy end to the Cross Country season - [25th Mar 2010]
Several young Harriers have been very much involved in representing the County in cross-country meetings recently.
In the English Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Birmingham earlier this month, Abigail Fowlie (28th), Brittany Saville (31st) and Rebecca Moore (70th) all contributed to the Sussex U20 Women’s team’s eighth place. Matt Dumigan (31st) led the Senior Men’s team home in eleventh place, whilst India Spoor was one of the U13 Girls’ team, which finished ninth in their race.
All the girls, together with Phina Sunderland, Emily Moore and Lauren Bourne, were in action again at the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Manchester on 20th March. On this occasion, Brittany (30th) just had the better of Abigail (37th) and, with Rebecca (146th) completing the team of six, put Sussex in a creditable sixth position in the Senior Girls’ race. Phina (89th), Emily (230th) and Lauren (270th) were members of the Intermediate Girls’ team, which did not make the top ten. Neither did the Sussex Junior Girls’ team, but India (170th) was a valuable contributor to their score.
Eight members from one club or town in the County squad is a statistic to be proud of.

World Masters 2009 Championships - [22nd Mar 2010]
These Championship Games in Lahti, Finland, last year, have faded into the past, but it is worth remembering that a contingent of Harriers performed very well in their respective age categories. In particular, your Chairman, Brian Matthews, was one of the GB Over 50 4 x 400m Relay team, which crossed the line in second place, behind the USA. However, one of the Americans has since tested positive and that team has been disqualified, elevating the GB team to first place (Gold). We now have a World Champion in our midst.
The team of Ian Broadhurst, Jeff Battista, Eric Smart and Brian recorded an impressive time of 3:46.38
