Special Olympics Worthing took 2 teams to Portsmouth on Saturday to take part in the National Sporthall event where they competed against 15 teams from across the UK.

Being the first event of the season many of the team were quite nervous especially our six new athletes who were competing for the first time. They had no need as they got off to a good start and were soon clocking up personal bests. At the half way stage the ‘A’ team were lying in 3rd place and all athletes were enjoying the very noisy atmosphere. The competition finished with the relay events where double points were up for grabs, and the team were particularly keen to make amends in an event where they slipped up last year. Whilst the ‘B’ team had some nervous changeovers the ‘A’ team were flying, coming home in an excellent time to secure 2nd place in the competition.
Final Result
1st – Bournemouth – 204pts
2nd – Worthing ‘A’ – 162pts
3rd – Isle of Wight – 154pts
(Our ‘B’ team finished in 8th position)

It was a busy weekend around the county with the final cross country league at Lancing Manor and several Harriers running the Brighton Half Marathon.
Saturday brought a nice return to form for Lauren Bourne still in the U17′s age group, looking very strong to win the Senior Womens race from fellow Harrier Sharon Elder. The two Harriers had an excellent battle around the hilly 5K course and are both coming into some nice form for the upcoming track season.
In the vet mens categories Pete Lay retained his V50 league title with Paul Bond taking the V40 and Alan Clarke 2nd in the V60. Well done to all our cross country runners, there has been some excellent running throughout the winter.

Sunday brought fine running conditions for the Brighton Half Marathon. There was a good show of green vests and several PB performances.
Leading the 7,427 finishers was our own Matthew Dumigan racing in his duel club vest (Swansea Harriers) winning in a time of 1:08:41. The ever improving Henry Teague-Smith, was the first official Harrier with another great performance in his first Half Marathon.
This was also the first Half Marathon and longest ever run for several of our “new to distance running” Harriers who all dug deep to achieve some very respectable times, well done Team Green!
